The men’s Indian cricket team will begin their journey in the year 2026 with a three-match ODI series vs New Zealand. The ODI series will be followed by a five-match T20I series against the Black Caps as well. Shubman Gill is expected to return to lead the Indian ODI side after recovering from a neck injury. KL Rahul was the captain of the ODI side in Gill’s absence and lead Team India to a 2-1 series win over South Africa last month. The ODI series will also witness the return of world No. 1 and 2 ODI batters – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – who have also made their mark in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. The BCCI and Team India are expected to rest pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the ODI series ahead of the T20I series and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 starting on February 7. Bumrah has not played any ODI cricket for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup and is unlikely to play in the format before the end of T20 World Cup. The ODI series will take place in Baroda Rajkot and Indore on January 11 14 and 18. According to media report the BCCI selectors may announce the squad for the ODI series on either January 3 or 4. The meeting is set to take place online as the selectors have picked the same squad for the five-match T20I series vs New Zealand as well as the T20 World Cup 2026. In what should be a big boost for Team India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is set to return the cricket field for the first time after his spleen injury in the third ODI vs Australia in October. Iyer is expected to turn out for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 match ahead of the Indian team’s selection for the ODI series. The selectors may also consider dropping Rishabh Pant for the ODI series and Jharkhand captain Ishan Kishan may come into contention for the ODI squad as well.
