Australia announce T20 World Cup 2026 squad with strong spin attack, Cummins selected despite injury concerns

New Delhi: Australia named their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday January 1. Mitchell Marsh-led side has opted a spin-heavy setup. Mitchell Owen was the only major omission with the selectors choosing to include four specialist spinners in the squad. Following Mitchell Starcs retirement from the format Australia did not include any left-arm pacer in the squad. Spencer Johnson was ruled out due to a back injury while Xavier Bartlett has been included ahead of Ben Dwarshius. Cooper Connolly has emerged as a surprise pick in the squad Cooper Connolly who has not played in Australias last 12 T20Is has emerged as a surprise pick in the squad. Matthew Short Matthew Kuhnemann and Bartlett are also set to make their T20 World Cup debuts when the tournament gets underway on February 7 with India and Sri Lanka co-hosting the event. The squad has been named without a backup wicketkeeper with Josh Inglis being the only specialist gloveman. Pat Cummins has been picked despite injury concerns and his availability will depend on the results of a back scan later this month while Josh Hazlewood and Tim David are yet to recover from hamstring injuries. Under ICC regulations teams can make changes to their squads until January 31. A squad for the three-game T20 series against Pakistan which precedes the World Cup will be named at a later date Bailey said Australia have been placed in Group B with Oman Ireland Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. They are set to play their opening match against Ireland on February 11 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. All of their group-stage matches will be played in Sri Lanka before they head to India for a few Super Eight games. Before the World Cup Australia is also set to face Pakistan in a three-match T20I series.
