New Delhi: Pretoria Capitals got off to a winning start in SA20 Season 4 joining Paarl Royals in claiming their first victories on Wednesday. The Capitals comfortably defeated MI Cape Town by 85 runs securing a bonus-point win at Newlands.
West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford all-round performance guided Capitals to victory. Rutherford (47* off 15 balls 6x6) and Dewald Brevis (36* off 13 balls 1x4 4x6) set the stage with explosive batting before the West Indies star delivered a career-best bowling spell of 4/24 restricting MI Cape Town to just 135 in reply to the Capitals massive 220/5.
Rutherford played an aggresive knock
The duo stitched an impressive 86-run partnership from only 27 balls recovering from a poor Powerplay after Kagiso Rabada had reduced the visitors to 36/3. The pair matched each other shot for shot but it was Rutherfords aggressive assault on Dewald Pretorius in the penultimate over that thrilled the Newlands crowd.
This explosive finish followed the initial recovery efforts from Shai Hope (45 off 30 balls 3x4 2x6) and Wihan Lubbe (60 off 36 balls 7x4 2x6). Rutherford won the Player of the Match award after winning 77.4% of the fan vote.
MI Cape Towns opener gave a solid start
MI Cape Town depended on their star openers Ryan Rickelton (33 off 17 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (28 off 20 balls) who gave their side a solid start with a 60-run partnership inside the Powerplay.
However the chase lost momentum once both openers were dismissed even though Nicholas Pooran briefly threatened a revival by smashing Keshav Maharaj (3/28) for four consecutive sixes during his rapid 25 off six balls.
Maharaj had the final say dismissing Pooran as part of a three-wicket spell that dismantled MI Cape Towns middle order and effectively ended the hosts hopes. Earlier Paarl Royals captain David Miller had guided his team to a successful chase with a well-timed unbeaten 71 off just 38 deliveries.
