Liam Rosenior, the current manager of Strasbourg, is being touted as a potential successor to Enzo Maresca at Chelsea. The Italian coach's tenure at Stamford Bridge has ended following a string of disappointing Premier League results and reported disagreements with the club's top brass.
Maresca's comments after a 3-1 loss to Leeds United hinted at turmoil within the club, revealing that the two days leading up to their next match against Everton had been particularly challenging. "The way the players want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many problems, they are doing very well after a complicated week," said Maresca, while discussing an assist by Malo Gusto last month.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people didn't support us." When pressed for clarification, Maresca elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to individuals within the club, he responded: "In general. In general," but later clarified that his comments were not aimed at the fans or the media, stating: "I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans."
However, following a run of just one victory in their last seven matches, Maresca was notably absent from the post-match press conference after the draw with Bournemouth, leaving Willy Caballero to handle media responsibilities.
The former goalkeeper revealed: "Enzo [Maresca] isn't feeling well. He didn't feel well the last two days but still made training and made the game today. I took his position just to clarify that he isn't feeling well enough to do the rest of the stuff that the manager has to do, so I'm here instead."
After a tenure of 18 months, Maresca has now departed from the club. His stint saw him lift the Europa Conference League trophy and the Club World Cup last summer, with Chelsea still vying for all four competitions this season.
Rosenior, currently at the helm of Chelsea's affiliate club Strasbourg, is being touted as one of the potential successors at Stamford Bridge (11/2 SkyBet). His impressive leadership at the French club, leading them to a seventh-place finish in his inaugural season, has not gone unnoticed.
Strasbourg is also owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's BlueCo group. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola (9/1 SkyBet) is another name linked with the Chelsea managerial role, featuring among the early favourites according to oddschecker.
Cesc Fabregas, a former Chelsea midfielder (9/1 Sky Bet), is also in the frame after his commendable performance with Serie A side Como. Xavi, the ex-Barcelona boss, is the favourite to take over (4/1 SkyBet).
Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace's manager (11/2 SkyBet), is also rumoured to be in contention for the Chelsea job following his successful spell at Selhurst Park, which included an FA Cup victory last season.
Any manager coming in would face a tough task to steady the ship following a nightmare run of results which has seen the Blues drop from title contenders to fifth place and 15 points off the pace.
