Rishabh Pant Vijay Hazare is performing brilliantly in the trophy. Rishabh Pant has scored half-centuries in four matches in this tournament. But he hasn’t missed a single ODI in the last 18 months. If Pant is ruled out of the upcoming series against New Zealand, it could be a wrong decision by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. The Indian selectors are set to announce the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11 in Vadodara. It will be interesting to see if Pant finds a place in this team.

If Pant is dropped for this series, many questions may arise. Pant was part of the Champions Trophy squad in 2025 and the ODI squad against South Africa last month. However, Pant has not played a single ODI match. This time opener Rituraj Gaikwad was played at number four and Pant was left out of all the three matches.

Rishabh PtHe has played only 31 ODIs since his debut in 2018. He has played 11 ODIs between 30 June 2019 and 14 January 2020. Since then, post-Covid, he has played 15 ODIs from 26 March 2021 to 30 November 2022, including a century. Then he had a terrible car accident. Since his comeback in 2024, he has played only one ODI in Colombo. In four Vijay Hazare Trophy matches, he has managed to score only 70 runs in one match.

against New Zealand A 15-man squad is unlikely to have three wicketkeepers. KL Rahul is the preferred batsman as wicket keeper and it will be important to see if he replaces Ishan Pant or Jurel in the team.

With the return of skipper Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma’s presence at the other end and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century in the last ODI, Devdutt Padikal’s place seems unlikely. In bowling, with the T20 World Cup in mind, Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya may be rested from ODIs. Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh can also be considered. Mohammad Shami is expected to make a comeback in this series. While Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are likely to handle the spin department.
