Trilokinath Temple is considered to be the most ancient and sacred temple of Himachal Pradesh. This temple is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,750 meters above sea level. The deity installed here is worshiped as Hindu Lord Shiva while in Buddhism he is considered Avalokiteshvara.
The architecture of the temple is influenced by the Kath-Kuni style and a beautiful combination of stone and wood is seen here. The serene atmosphere, snow covered hills and flowing rivers in the temple complex further enhance its spiritual energy.
It is believed that visiting Trilokinath temple destroys all troubles and the devotee attains salvation. Local people believe that Lord Trilokinath fulfills every wish of his devotees. Special prayers are offered here for the happiness of children, disease prevention and mental peace. It is said that prayer done here with a true heart never goes unfruitful.
According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva had performed penance at this place and appeared here to protect the three worlds, heaven, earth and underworld, hence he was called Trilokinath.
According to another legend, this place is associated with Avalokiteshvara, the symbol of compassion and mercy, who in Buddhism is considered the remover of suffering of all living beings. Over time the place became equally revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
Trilokinath temple has a deep connection with Buddhism. Buddhist followers worship Lord Shiva here in the form of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. It is one of the rare religious places in the world where Hindu and Buddhist devotees worship the same deity but according to different religious traditions. Even today, Buddhist monks can be seen worshiping and chanting mantras here.
To reach Trilokinath temple, one has to first reach Keylong in Himachal Pradesh, which is the headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti district.
Road route:
Trilokinath village is situated at a distance of about 9–10 kilometers from Keylong. The temple can be easily reached from Keylong via taxi or local bus.
Nearest Airport:
The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu). From here one can reach Keylong and then Trilokinath by road.
Nearest Railway Station:
The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar but from there onwards one has to travel by road.
Trilokinath Temple is not only a place of worship but also a living example of religious harmony and co-existence. Every year Hindu and Buddhist communities celebrate festivals together here.
