Why are military coaches no longer seen on trains? What are the reasons for their removal?

Indian trains previously had separate coaches for the military, but their number is now decreasing. Several factors contribute to this, including security concerns, coach availability, defense quotas, and railway modernization.

Previously, we would see an extra coach attached to trains for Indian soldiers or the Indian military, which was reserved for them. This coach looked completely different from the rest of the train's coaches because it was dark green and bore symbols associated with the Indian Army. However, today, the number of these special military coaches on trains is significantly decreasing, for several reasons.

The biggest reason for the decrease in the number of military coaches on trains is the limited availability of these coaches. They were not easily available.  Often, these military coaches were not even present on the train because they required separate maintenance.

A military coach attached to any train stood out from the rest of the train's coaches due to its distinct color and symbols. This was not considered ideal from a security perspective.

The easy identification of the military coach on the train increased the security risk for soldiers, as any attacker or terrorist could easily target this specific coach.

Currently, Indian Railways has increased the defense quota for seats on trains, allowing soldiers to easily get seats on regular trains. This enables Indian soldiers to travel by making reservations on regular trains.

While Indian Railways has reduced the number of military coaches, special military trains are still operated. These trains are used for the movement of Indian soldiers, allowing a large number of soldiers to be transported from one place to another.

Another reason for the decreasing number of military coaches on Indian trains is that the government is now using military aircraft more frequently for the movement of soldiers. This makes travel for soldiers faster, safer, and easier.

Indian Railways is gradually phasing out its old blue ICF coaches and replacing them with new and modern LHB coaches. These coaches are safer, more advanced, and more comfortable than the older ones. The railway is now working on a plan to use these modern coaches instead of manufacturing special military coaches.
