Liverpool news: First January transfer completed as Arne Slot receives boost

The January transfer window is officially open andLiverpool could be set for a busy month in the market. Despite a hefty outlay in the summer on the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, Arne Slot could swoop for a fresh face if the right deal presents itself.

Liverpool are facing a shortage of options up top with Mohamed Salah's Africa Cup of Nations involvement and Alexander Isak's long-term injury.

Calls for the Reds to dip into the market have only intensified after Injuries to Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez have also left Liverpool thin at the back.

Liverpool have now been given a boost should they decide to move once again for Marc Guehi, after a summer move collapsed, while the club have confirmed their first transfer of the winter window. Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news coming out of Anfield.

Marc Guehi boost

Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has admitted he doesn’t know if Guehi will remain at the club during the January transfer window. The Reds were mere minutes away from signing the England centre-back on transfer deadline day in September only for the deal to fall through at the last second.

The Reds agreed a £35 million fee with Palace and Guehi even took part in a medical. The 25-year-old defender is out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 season and will not sign a new deal with the Eagles.

While there's been little movement of Liverpool coming back in for Guehi so far, Glasner has admitted he doesn't know what will happen with his captain this month, giving the Reds a boost that a move could materialise.

Speaking about Guehi's future, Glasner said: "You will ask me all these questions again and again and again. I need to find one answer. I will always tell you the same, as long as I don't know anything else.

"Because, believe me, if I knew something. I would tell you. So I don't know what's going on. I don't know what will happen with Marc [Guehi]. I don't know what will happen with new players, and I don't know what will happen with JP [Jean-Philippe Mateta], I don't know anything."

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are Liverpool's only fit centre-back options as it stands. Joe Gomez is sidelined with injury while summer signing Giovanni Leoni has been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.

First transfer confirmed

James Norris has made a permanent move to Shelbourne. The 22-year-old defender has been on loan with the League of Ireland Premier Division side since February.

The switch sees Norris end his long association with his boyhood side. The Liverpool-born star joined the club's academy at under-9s level.

He ascended through the ranks to make two appearances for the first team. His debut came in December 2019, at the age of 16, when he was a substitute in the 5-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa.

He became the fourth-youngest player in Liverpool's history at the time. Norris' second and final appearance for Liverpool's first team came in January 2022 when he came on in injury-time in the 4-1 FA Cup third-round win at home to Shrewsbury Town.

A club spokesperson said: "Everyone at Liverpool FC wishes James the best of luck for the future." Several young stars from Liverpool's academy could now be considered for loan moves this month with the likes of Trent Kone-Doherty, Rhys Williams, Kieran Morrison and Calvin Ramsay all possible departures.
