Winter has fully arrived across the UK, and temperatures have been dropping below zero overnight. Many drivers now wake up to frozen cars, iced-over windscreens and an early-morning routine that often starts with scraping, waiting and battling the cold.

It's a frustrating start to the day, especially when you're already short on time. While people use all sorts of tricks to clear the glass quicker, there is one simple method that some motorists say works far better than scraping or sprays. According to motoring specialists at Driving Test Success, drivers can clear an icy windscreen in minutes by pressing one button inside the car rather than using tools, hot water or harsh de-icers.

They explained that many people don't realise their vehicle already has a built-in system designed for this exact problem.

In a TikTok video, Driving Test Success showed how switching on the windscreen heating system and turning the settings to maximum melts the ice far faster than manual scraping.

The caption on the clip said: "Frozen windscreen? Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max. The ice will start to melt from the heat. Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal."

The video has gained more than two thousand likes, with viewers praising how simple the method is.

One person commented: "Wow magic, the ice is gone." Another added: "It's not a hidden secret that this works. In some cars the button is even called a front and rear defroster. But you're right it works really well."

A third wrote: "While I am disappointed because I thought it was some sort of new break-through method, it is the best way to get rid of windscreen ice quickly. And you don't have to get out of the car either. It might take longer in older cars though."

Driving Test Success is not the only organisation encouraging drivers to use the method.

In a separate video, Clear View Driving told motorists to activate their demister before setting off.

They said: "Now don't use your windscreen wipers or washers as that won't help. Turn on your front and rear demister.

"The rear demister also heats up your side mirrors in most new cars. But if the mirrors are not clear, make sure to clear them before you start driving."

The AA also urges drivers to use their vehicle's heating systems to remove frost quickly.

It advised: "Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen. Switch on the rear windscreen heater and heated mirrors, if you have them.

"Then, once it's done you can use your wipers. Turn on the air-con. It's not just for summer, it'll remove moisture from the air to stop the car from misting up."

Experts added: "Don't use your hands to wipe misted-up windows, you'll leave greasy smears, and a diamond ring could scratch the glass.

"Use a lint-free absorbent cloth if necessary. Stay with your car the whole time while the engine's running."

The AA also warns drivers not to pour boiling water on their windscreen, as the sudden temperature change can crack the glass.

They also say motorists should make sure wipers aren't frozen to the screen before switching them on, as this can damage the blades or the motor. And they remind people to clear all snow and ice before driving to ensure full visibility.
