The war of Mahabharata was a war between religion and unrighteousness, in which in the end religion i.e. Pandavas were victorious. The war of Mahabharata was the result of Duryodhana's arrogance. He did not want to give his share to the Pandavas.
Duryodhana always wanted war with Pandavas. Because he was proud of the power of Bhishma Pitamah, Guru Dronacharya, his friends Karna, Kripacharya and Ashwatthama. He felt that no army in the world would come forward to face these masters. Then the armies of Pandavas and Kauravas came face to face in Kurukshetra. The army of Kauravas was bigger than that of Pandavas, but Duryodhana was still scared.
Kauravas had 11 armies while Pandavas had 7 Akshauhini armies.
In the Mahabharata war, Kauravas had 11 Akshauhini army, while Pandavas had 7 Akshauhini army. Obviously the army of Kauravas was much larger than that of Pandavas. On top of that, great warriors like Bhishma Pitamah, Guru Dronacharya and Karna were fighting in favor of the Kauravas. There was a shortage of expert charioteers on the Pandavas side also and the biggest thing is that Lord Shri Krishna himself was Arjun's charioteer in this war. Dharma was on the side of Pandavas.
There were many reasons for Duryodhana's fear.
Despite having a bigger army than the Pandavas, Duryodhana was afraid because he was afraid of Arjuna's might. At the same time, he also knew that the great warriors like Bhishma Pitamah and Guru Dronacharya who were fighting on his behalf, were not fighting for victory but to fulfill their duties. Duryodhana also knew that Shri Krishna was with the Pandavas and no huge army could stand in front of the pair of him and Arjun.
After the death of Arjun's son Abhimanyu in the war of Mahabharata, Arjun's anger had become very intense. Duryodhana was scared even after seeing Arjun's anger.
