Chelsea and Enzo Maresca have parted ways with immediate effect, ending his spell as head coach less than two years into his contract. Maresca had been appointed in June 2024 on a five-year deal running until 2029.
The decision followed a Chelsea board meeting on Thursday to discuss his future, with the team winless in their previous three matches. A club statement confirmed the separation and thanked Maresca for leading Chelsea to victories in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. The club said both sides believed a change was necessary to give the team the best chance of getting the season back on track, with key objectives still in play across four competitions, including Champions League qualification.
Maresca had been named Premier League Manager of the Month for November, but uncertainty around his future grew after comments he made following a win over Everton on December 13, when he said the previous 48 hours had been his worst at the club because of a lack of support.
It later emerged that Maresca was considered a leading candidate by Manchester City should Pep Guardiola leave in the future. Sources said Maresca informed Chelsea in late October and mid-December that he had spoken to people connected to City about a possible future vacancy, something he was contractually required to disclose. Guardiola remains under contract at City until 2027.
Chelsea’s long-term plan had been to review Maresca’s performance after two years, but the situation escalated after a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, Chelsea’s third consecutive match without a win. Both the manager and players were booed off at full-time at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca joined Chelsea after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title and automatic promotion. In his first season at Stamford Bridge, he won the Conference League and the expanded Club World Cup. At the time of his departure, Chelsea sits fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal and five points above 14th-placed Brighton.

Although he stated he did not intend to leave and was open to discussing a contract extension, Chelsea declined to offer a new deal because he had already signed a long-term contract running until 2030 in the summer of 2024.
Maresca’s final match in charge was a 2-2 home draw against Bournemouth, during which supporters booed and chanted criticism after he substituted Cole Palmer. Shortly after, Maresca decided to step down, a rare move for a Premier League manager.
