News India Live, Digital Desk: Has it ever happened to you that you woke up in the morning, saw your face in the mirror and you were shocked? Eyes swollen, cheeks puffed up…it seems as if someone has filled the face with air.

Most of the time we think, “Oh, maybe there was too much salt in the dinner last night” or “Maybe I didn’t get enough sleep.” We splash some cold water on our faces, or rub ice and go to work. But friends, if this is happening again and again, stop. Your body is trying to tell you something. Facial swelling is not always caused by ‘excess salt’ or ‘fatigue’.

1. The game of cortisol (Stress Hormones)
Are you under a lot of stress these days? When we are stressed, a hormone called ‘Cortisol’ increases in our body. In simple language it is called ‘stress hormone’. This hormone retains water in the body, and its first effect is visible on our face. So if your face is puffy, think about whether you are taking too much stress?

2. Thyroid disorders
Constant swelling on the face can be a major symptom of hypothyroidism. When the thyroid gland does not function properly, the metabolism slows down and along with weight gain in the body, puffiness appears on the face. If you are feeling tired, then definitely get a thyroid test done.

3. Is there any infection?
Sometimes facial swelling also occurs due to some internal infection.

  • Sinus: If there is heaviness and swelling around the nose or on the forehead, it may be sinusitis.
  • Dental problems: Many times infection of teeth or gums also causes swelling on the cheeks, which we ignore.

4. Side effects of medicines
Are you taking any new medicines? Due to high BP, side effects of steroids or painkillers, water starts accumulating in the body, due to which the face starts looking like ‘Moon Face’.

Now the question is – what to do?
Home remedies have their place, but if swelling is not going away even after good sleep and reducing salt, then “Google Doctor” Stop being. This could also be a sign of some kidney problem. Therefore, it is best to meet your doctor once and get a routine checkup done.
