Queens mother charged after 15-month-old son found dying beside her, police say

A harrowing scene inside a quiet Queens home has left a community reeling after a 15-month-old boy was found dying in a bathroom alongside his mother, who had slashed her wrists in an apparent suicide attempt. Police say the child, who showed no visible signs of trauma, could not be saved, and his mother now faces murder charges as investigators work to unravel how the toddler died. Police said the mother used a box cutter to slash her wrists.

Nicole Boodhai, 28, has been charged with murder and endangering the welfare of a child. An NYPD spokesman said that investigators have not yet determined how the baby died and noted there were no obvious signs of trauma when the child was found. Officials said the mother appeared to have suffered self-inflicted slash wounds to her wrists.

According to the Morning Sun website, police found Nicole Boodhai and her 15-month-old son, Charlie Ramraykha, inside a blood-soaked bathroom after responding to a call at their South Jamaica home on 157th Street near 109th Avenue.

"A young child, it's just unfathomable. I'm a single mom of three that just moved here in September and this is unfathomable," another neighbor said according to the ABC7 website.

Both mother and son were rushed to Jamaica Hospital, but Charlie later died, while his mother survived and is recovering as she faces criminal charges.

The incident rattled neighbors, including 20-year-old Fateema Masuma, who lives two doors away and said Charlie lived with his father and sister, along with his mother, who is from Guyana. “I heard the man screaming really loud and a child scream-crying too, it was scary,” she said.
