Assembly elections are to be held in Assam and Tamil Nadu in the year 2026. Elections are to be held simultaneously in both the states in March-April i.e. about 4-5 months are left from now. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started distributing responsibilities among its leaders for both the states. BJP has made Union Minister Piyush Goyal for Tamil Nadu and party’s national vice president Baijayant Panda in-charge for Assam. Apart from these two, two leaders each have also been made co-in-charge for Assam and Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, Baijayant Panda was made in-charge of Delhi elections and working behind the scenes, he played an important role in helping BJP win in Delhi. Now there is a big responsibility on the shoulders of these two leaders. While Baijayant Panda has got the job of maintaining the government in Assam, Piyush Goyal’s job is to strengthen the BJP in Tamil Nadu and hold talks with the alliance partners so that a situation of conflict does not arise.
There is BJP government in Assam for the last 10 years. Sarbananda Sonowal was the Chief Minister in the first government and Himanta Biswa Sarma was made the Chief Minister for the second time. This time too, BJP is going to contest the elections under the leadership of Himanta. At the same time, Congress has put forward MP and State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi. He is also the son of former CM Tarun Gogoi.
BJP has made Baijayant Panda in-charge for Assam. Along with him, Leader of Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Kumar Sharma and former Union Minister Darshana Ben have been made co-in-charge. Even in the 2021 Assam elections, Baijayant Panda was made in-charge of Assam and his hard work bore fruit and BJP was successful in saving its power. In September this year, Baijayant Panda was made in-charge of Tamil Nadu, but now his responsibilities have been changed and he has again been given the responsibility of Assam.
Tamil Nadu is one such state among the states of South India where BJP has never been able to form a government on its own. For a long time she has been busy strengthening herself in Tamil Nadu. Once the Union Home Minister also announced that there will be an alliance of BJP with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). However, the status of this alliance is not clear. However, it is clear that BJP can also form an alliance and contest the elections against the alliance of ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress.
In Tamil Nadu too, the term of the Assembly will end in May 2026, so there is every possibility that the elections of Assam and Tamil Nadu will be held simultaneously. BJP has made Piyush Goyal in-charge for Tamil Nadu. Along with him, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Minister of State in the Civil Aviation Ministry Muralidhar Mohol have been made co-in-charge.
