Today, while playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 match, Iyer proved his fitness and form. This inning of Iyer is a news of relief for the Indian team before the ODI series against New Zealand starting from January 11.
Shreyas Iyer’s old style was seen in this match played against Himachal Pradesh at Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur. Due to heavy fog the match was reduced to 33 overs each. Mumbai had a bad start and Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Sarfaraz Khan (21) returned to the pavilion cheaply.
After this, Shreyas Iyer took charge and played an aggressive inning of 82 runs in just 53 balls. During this period, 10 fours and 3 sixes came from his bat. However, he missed his century and was out to left-arm spinner Kushal Pal.
This comeback of Shreyas Iyer is special because his injury was very serious. During the Sydney ODI on the Australian tour, he fell on his ribs while taking a catch at the boundary. After this injury, Iyer was kept in ICU for a few days. Because of this he could not play the home series against South Africa. He is included in the team for the New Zealand series, but his playing is still dependent on the final fitness clearance from the medical team.
On the other hand, the day was not good for Team India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill. Gill, who could not play the last match due to food poisoning, took the field for Punjab against Goa, but was out after scoring just 11 runs (12 balls). Vasuki Kaushik sent him to the pavilion.
