Why does this hellish Government hate pensioners so much? Not content with snatching away with their Winter Fuel Allowance this time it's coming for drivers over 70 who they say should have enforced eye tests every three years which, if they fail, will result in them having their licences taken away - forever!
And if all that sounds a bit 1984 - it's because it damn well is. It's yet another example of this rotten socialist state taking control of our lives - but particularly pensioners' lives - making them even more vulnerable than they already are.
How dare Starmer and co try to make the over-70s scapegoats in the name of road safety?
Of course, I understand people have to be able to see to drive - how else can we keep ourselves and others safe while at the wheel of a two-tonne piece of machinery. But why presume it's the over-70s with the eye problems?
Millions of ALL ages have less than perfect vision but don't wear glasses. So why isn't everyone being forced to have compulsory eye tests - not just pensioners?
And I wouldn't mind if it was pensioners in general, but the over-70s in particular, who were causing most of the accidents on Britain's roads. But they're nowhere close to being the biggest culprits.
The worst offenders are male drivers aged between 17 to 24. These guys are involved in more car accidents than any other age group and are FOUR times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than older drivers. They're involved in 16% of all serious or fatal collisions yet make up just 7% of ALL licence holders.
Compare that to the over-70s - and particularly the over-80s - who are involved in fewer accidents overall than younger people. In fact, research shows older drivers exhibit safer driving behaviours than almost any other age group because they're not likely to be on the mobile, speeding, drink driving or taking drugs.
But pensioners aren't even the second worst offenders - that title goes to those aged between 25 to 34, followed by those aged 35 to 39. So, fact! Pensioners aren't in any of the high-risk groups yet they're the ones being targeted.
This spiteful government is pushing the notion that it's confused, doddery old people who are causing all the accidents when it isn't. Yes, they have accidents but less than any other age group. So, Starmer needs to stop scapegoating them.
Because if these new proposals become law, it will radically change the lives of the six million drivers over the age of 70 (1.6 million of those are over 80). Because for most of those drivers cars aren't a luxury, they're a lifeline.
They provide independence, and dignity, but most important of all, access to the world. And if the Government starts snatching away licences from the over-70s, what will happen to pensioners in rural communities where buses and trains are hopeless or non-existent?
What happens when an optician informs the DVLA that an elderly person has failed an eye test? I'll tell you what - it makes them prisoners in their own homes. It isolates them from friends, family, doctors, and access to food and pharmacies. Medical appointments will be missed.
And what about those with mobility issues? How the hell are they ever going to get to the supermarket, to the GP's, to collect their pension or have coffee with friends? Because on their miserly state pensions they sure as hell can't afford taxis.
Stealing licences away from the over-70s doesn't eliminate risk - it just transfers it to isolation, depression and social disconnection
Driving can be their only link with the outside world, and this bloody government wants to take that away.
If Starmer wants our roads to be safer why not have eye tests every three years for every age group? Why not permanently ban those from driving who put the lives of others in danger?
In fact, if he's really serious about saving lives why not target the young men causing the majority of the accidents and fatalities. These men account for 78% of ALL road fatalities and 62% of injuries. So, target them instead of those who do the least harm on the roads.
Of course, these tests are sod all to do with road safety and everything to do with Starmer's obsession with dragging us back into the EU because if these compulsory eye tests became law, it would put us in line with EU rules and regulations.
But like I said at the start, this Labour government hates pensioners because they're an easy target. Shame on the lot of them!
