Everything is not going well in Tata Trust. ‘Power tussle’ has been going on in Tata Trust for a month. Two groups have formed in the trust. The dispute between the two groups increased so much that the government also had to intervene. Now again after a month the board meeting of Tata Trust is being held but will this dispute be resolved in it or not? Don’t know. But the government has made it clear that this dispute should be resolved as soon as possible. That’s because this controversy raises questions on the credibility of the country’s largest corporate group.

This whole controversy started from a meeting on September 11. This dispute took place over the appointment of a director on the board of Tata Sons. On this, two factions have divided in Tata Trust. The first faction is of Noel Tata, who was made the chairman of Tata Trust after the death of Ratan Tata. The second faction is that of Mehil Mistry.

When this controversy started in Tata Trust, it also caught the attention of the Central Government. It is being said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had recently met the board of Tata Trust regarding this. The government had asked Tata Trust to resolve this dispute as soon as possible.

How did this whole controversy start?

A board meeting of Tata Trust was held on 11 September. The agenda of the meeting was to re-appoint former Defense Secretary Vijay Singh as a nominee director on the board of Tata Sons.

Actually, Ratan Tata passed away last year. After this it was decided that after the age of 75 years, the nominee director would be appointed every year. Vijay Singh has been on the board of Tata Sons since 2012. Now his age is 77 years. Therefore, a board meeting was called for his reappointment.

Tata Trust Chairman Noel Tata and Board Member Venu Srinivasan wanted Vijay Singh to be appointed as the nominee director again. But 4 trustees including Mehil Mistry were opposing it. Ultimately no result was achieved and Vijay Singh resigned from the board of Tata Sons.

Who wanted what?

There are 7 trustees in Tata Trust. When the meeting took place on September 11, 6 trustees were present. The seventh trustee is Vijay Singh and a meeting was called for his re-appointment, hence he was not in that meeting.

Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan had proposed that Vijay Singh be re-appointed as nominee director. But four trustees – Mehil Mistry, Pramit Jhaveri, Jahangir HC Jahangir and Darius Khambata opposed it and rejected the proposal.

Why did you protest? Because 4 trustees wanted Mehil Mistry to be appointed as the nominee director of Tata Sons. But Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan were against it.
