On Christmas, the Christmas tree is decorated differently in every country. Every country has its own tradition. Some things seem common and some things seem completely different. The Christmas trees of countries like Ukraine and Poland have one thing in common, that is a spider web. Where these cannot be made, people use spiders and webs made of metals. Rich people also wear spiders made of gold or silver. It is named ‘Christmas Spider’.

In countries like Ukraine, Poland and Germany, people hang it on the Christmas tree at Christmas. There are many legends to spiders and Christmas in these countries, which may or may not be mentioned in the Bible but are definitely mentioned in the fables. • first story: In the house of a poor family, a small pine tree had grown out of the floor. It was a Christmas tree. On Christmas, people were decorating their homes, but they had nothing to decorate. I didn’t even have money to buy anything and decorate it. The children went to sleep sadly. When I woke up in the morning, the entire tree was covered with spider webs. As soon as the first rays of the sun fell, all the webs started shining like silver and gold. The tree suddenly became the most beautiful tree.
• another story: When Lord Jesus, Mary and Joseph were fleeing from Herod’s soldiers, they hid in a cave. A spider wove such a dense web at the mouth of the cave that the soldiers thought no one had come there for months. In this way the spider saved Jesus’ life. Therefore, in some places it is also considered a symbol of Saint Joseph.
• Third story: A woman’s husband had gone to war. At Christmas they had a tree, but nothing to decorate. At night a small spider from the house decorated the entire tree with its webs. In the morning the children screamed with joy and at that very moment, the woman’s husband returned safely after winning the battle. The spider made the family complete again.

Why is the spider considered sacred?

Spiders are very useful for farmers in Ukraine. They eat small insects growing on crops. Farmers consider the spider lucky. Seeing a spider or its web on Christmas Eve is considered very auspicious. That is why people hang shiny spider ornaments on trees, so that they bring good luck to the house.
