The Indian government has advised people to be cautious of two dangerous cyber frauds. The first is “WhatsApp Web Account Renting Scam” And the second one is “Matrimonial Website Investment Scam”. This warning has been issued by the Cyber Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) of the Home Ministry.
According to the government, many such advertisements are running on social media, in which the claim is ‘earn money automatically sitting at home’. It sounds easy, but in reality it is a trap of swindlers.
Such ads are often seen on Facebook and Instagram, in which it is written “Link WhatsApp and earn commission daily”. As soon as a user clicks on these ads, he is asked to download a fake website or unknown Android APK app. These apps look exactly like real earning platforms, so that no one has any doubt. But as soon as the APK is installed, the data and privacy of the phone becomes at risk.
In this scam, fraudsters first lure more money and higher commission. Then you are asked to scan the QR code and link your WhatsApp account. WhatsApp’s Linked Devices feature is misused in this way. As soon as the QR is scanned, your account goes under someone else’s control. After this, fraudsters use your number to cheat other people. The government has clearly said that renting out accounts and earning illegal money is a legal offense which can also lead to arrest.
The government has given some easy safety tips. Do not link your WhatsApp on the request of any unknown platform. “Quick Income” Stay away from ads. Never download APK from unknown sources. Regularly check the Linked Devices section of WhatsApp and remove unknown devices immediately.
According to I4C, thugs are also active on sites like Shaadi.com, Jeevansaathi.com. They create fake profiles and call themselves NRIs or big businessmen. First they win trust, then extort money by pretending to have a “secret investment plan”. The thugs disappear as soon as they get the money.
Verify identity before trusting anyone. Reverse image search of profile photo. Don’t share personal information unless you meet face to face. If an online friend suddenly talks about investing, be alert.
