A recent study has completely changed this common belief. According to this study, flushing the toilet can spread more dirt and germs into the air than we realize.

Toilet flush

We do many things in our daily lives that we never think about seriously, and using the toilet is one of those things. We go to the bathroom, finish, press the flush, and walk out without looking back. Hearing the loud sound of the flush, we think all the dirt has been washed away, everything is clean, and there is no danger left. But is that really the case?

A recent study has completely changed this common perception. According to this research, flushing the toilet can spread more dirt and germs into the air than we realize. This is why experts now recommend closing the toilet lid before flushing. So let's find out why you should close the toilet lid before flushing.

What does this new research say?

A study published in the American Journal of Infection Control attempted to understand what happens inside a bathroom when a toilet is flushed. The study examined the number of tiny germ-containing particles released into the air when flushing with the lid open and the lid closed. The study revealed that as we flush, tiny, invisible droplets are propelled into the air. These droplets are so small that they are invisible, but they can contain bacteria and germs. These particles can settle on the toilet seat, walls, floor, washbasin, and even nearby toothbrushes and towels. The most surprising finding was that some particles escape even when the lid is closed.

Why do germs come out even after the lid is closed?

Now, you might be wondering how germs get out if the lid is closed. The reason is simple. Toilets aren't completely airtight; there's a small gap between the lid and the seat. When flushed, the intense water pressure pushes the air upward, and tiny particles escape through that gap. This doesn't mean closing the lid is useless, but rather that the flushing process can be much dirtier than we might think.

Why should you close the toilet lid before flushing?

The toilet lid should be closed before flushing. While the lid may not trap every germ, it's still a very beneficial step. Closing the lid prevents large splashes from splashing directly out and traps them. In most homes, toothbrushes, soap, towels, and other items are kept near the toilet. Closing the lid prevents dirt from falling onto them. Flushing prevents moisture and odor from spreading throughout the bathroom. Fewer germs will spread, reducing the risk of infection and disease.

Essential hygiene habits

If you truly want to keep your bathroom clean and safe, simply closing the lid isn't enough. It's also important to adopt other good habits. Regularly clean the toilet seat, flush button, handle, and surrounding surfaces. It's crucial to have a window or exhaust fan in the bathroom to maintain proper air flow. Also, try to keep toothbrushes and towels away from the toilet or covered.
