Dr. Bhanu Mishra, Nephrologist, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, says that getting good sleep is very important for a person, because it helps in proper functioning of kidneys and body organs. People’s sleep gets disturbed due to insomnia, working in night shifts and sleep apnea. If this habit is repeated again and again, it has a bad effect on the kidneys.
Actually, experts say that there is a circadian rhythm in the kidneys, which filters the blood, cleans the dirt and balances the fluids and electrolytes of the body. Poor sleep can impair this natural process, which slows down kidney function.
He says that till now it has been observed in the patients that they are continuously sleeping less than six hours every night. Due to this, their risk of getting Chronic Kidney Disease increases.
Due to poor sleep every day, the level of stress hormones like cortisol increases in the body, due to which blood pressure starts increasing. High BP is also a major cause of kidney damage. This creates pressure on the small blood vessels found in the kidneys. Therefore, with time the kidneys start losing their filtering ability.
Disturbed sleep cycle also affects glucose metabolism in the body, which increases the risk of insulin resistance and diabetes. Diabetes also increases the risk of kidney disease, because continuously high blood sugar causes kidney tissue damage. Apart from this, lack of sleep also increases inflammation in the body.
Sleep disorders include obstructive sleep apnea, due to which the oxygen level in the body decreases during sleep. Due to less oxygen, kidney cells get damaged, due to which the chances of kidney diseases increase.
