What is spontaneous carotid artery rupture?

After examination, doctors found out that Rahul’s right carotid artery had burst. This is the same vein that supplies oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain. This condition is called spontaneous carotid artery rupture in medical language. According to doctors, it is very rare for this incident to happen without any injury, accident, infection or cancer. According to medical records, only a few such cases have been reported across the world.

may suffer a stroke

Blood flows at very high pressure in the carotid artery. If this vein bursts, a lot of blood can flow out of the body within a few minutes. In this case, blood filled rapidly inside the neck and a balloon-like structure was formed, which is called pseudoaneurysm. If the blood clot had reached the brain, there was a risk of stroke, paralysis or even brain death.

CT angiography test reveals

Seeing Rahul’s condition, the doctors immediately conducted imaging tests, which included tests like CT angiography. From these tests it became clear that the major vein in the neck had burst and there was no option other than immediate surgery.

How fatal could such an incident be?

According to doctors, if timely treatment is not received, rupture of the carotid artery can kill within a few minutes. This is why if you suddenly notice symptoms like severe pain in the neck, swelling, change in voice or fainting, it is very important to reach the hospital immediately.
