New Delhi: Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the first three T20I matches against New Zealand, it was confirmed on Thursday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to social media site X to make the announcement late on January 8.

Hi availability for the remaining two matches of the five-game series will be assessed on his progress during the course of the time and training and skill phases. Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Indian batter has undergone a successful surgery and will participate in the T20I series against the Kiwis and the subsequent T20 World Cup 2026.

But now with the BCCI’s announcement, it remains certain that the flamboyant batter will not take part in the opening three matches.

Tilak underwent Testicular Torsion in Rajkot

Tilak underwent a surgery for Testicular Torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday and was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning, confirmed the Indian cricket board. The Indian batter is scheduled to fly back to Hyderabad on Friday and is currently doing well. Additionally, the board also stated that he will resume training and skill-based activities after his symptoms have fully resolved and wound healing is satisfactory.

His availability for the last two T20Is on January 28 and 31 in Vizag and Trivandrum respectively, will be assessed according to his progress in the interim. He played Hyderabad’s Vijay Hazare Trophy game against Bengal on Tuesday and the injury did not occur during the match. Tilak experienced pain later and was immediately advised to undergo scans, followed by the procedure.
