When the design of the B-21 bomber was studied, researchers felt that this aircraft made by Northrop Grumman could not be completely strong in terms of balance in the air and flight stability. This aircraft is currently undergoing many rigorous flying tests of the US Air Force.
Scientist Huang Jiangtao of China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center and his team have described many types of simulations in their research. These also include the US Navy's X-47B stealth drone, which was canceled in 2015, but like the B-21, its information has also been kept confidential till now.
The researchers did not disclose what data they used for their analysis. But he said that to understand the design of an aircraft like B-21, 288 different parameters were used in the simulation. After the aerodynamic improvements, the lift-to-drag capability of the aircraft increased by about 15 percent and the shock wave was also significantly reduced.
According to the research paper, the pitching moment of the aircraft improved from 0.07 to −0.001. The closer it is to zero, the smoother the flight. When the pitching moment is positive the front of the aircraft rises and when it is negative the nose moves downwards.
Pitching moment almost equal to zero means that the aircraft can maintain straight and balanced flight on its own without much control from the pilot. This also saves fuel and makes the flight more stable.
With increased lift and reduced air pressure losses, the improved B-21 design appeared to have good long-range flying capabilities. According to the research, the PADJ-X system is a completely indigenous technology and five important areas have been integrated in it. These include aerodynamics, engine system, electromagnetic system, infrared signature and sonic boom. This system helps in improving the design of the aircraft from many aspects simultaneously.
