According to The Starthe actress made the disclosure during a recent interview on a web programme, recalling a relationship from her youth in which she only later learned the man she was dating already had a girlfriend.
“One day, I suddenly found out that I was actually the third party,” Hsuan said. “A university classmate told me that the man already had a girlfriend. It came completely out of the blue.”
Looking back, Hsuan said she blamed herself for being naïve and inexperienced at the time.
In another relationship, the actress said she dated a man who had not fully moved on from his former girlfriend. When the ex re-entered his life, both he and Hsuan mutually decided to end the relationship.
The star said these experiences left a lasting impact on her approach to romance, making her far more guarded around men.
“I became really frightened and genuinely stopped trusting men for a period of time,” she said. “When I had new boyfriends later on, I paid very close attention to their behaviour. If anything felt off, I would immediately pull back.”
She added that even small actions could raise red flags. Despite the setbacks, Hsuan said she has not lost faith in love and continues to believe in the idea of a “destined partner,” according to The Standard.
Hsuan, 56, began her acting career in late 1992. Alongside Maggie Cheung Ho-yee, Ada Choi, Flora Chan and Kenix Kwok, she was among Hong Kong broadcaster TVB’s top “Fa Dans” from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. The term, borrowed from Peking Opera, refers to actresses known for portraying young female leads and is commonly used to describe performers with widespread popularity.
