Elon Musk's social media platform X has disabled the image creation feature of its AI tool, Grok, for most users. This move comes after a major controversy in which the tool was being used to generate offensive images of women and children. According to reports, the company took this decision after facing threats of a ban on X in the UK and hefty fines.
Only Paid Subscribers Can Use It
Grok announced on X that image generation and editing are now limited to paid subscribers only. This means that free users will no longer be able to create images using Grok. The rationale behind this decision is that the company has the credit card details and complete information of paid subscribers. Therefore, if a user misuses this feature, their identity can be easily traced.
Why the Controversy?
A recent research revealed that Grok was being used to manipulate images of women. The chatbot was also being used to create violent scenes. Thousands of such images went viral on social media after an update at the end of December.
Strict Warning from the UK Government
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken a strong stance on this issue. He described these images as "shameful" and "illegal." Starmer warned that if X does not remove this content and improve its procedures, strict action will be taken against it. He also instructed media regulator Ofcom to be prepared to take action. This global pressure and fear of legal action forced Musk's company to take this drastic step.
