Rajesh had been preparing for this trip for many days. He had planned a party at the villa with his friends to take a break from the stress of work and the daily grind. Photos on social media, songs, alcohol, night parties… everything was decided. Finally got a farmhouse near Karjat. It was the cheapest in the area, but no one thought too much of it as fun was more important than money.
Everyone reached the villa in the afternoon. Big gate, trees around, peaceful atmosphere. At first everything seemed normal. The afternoon was spent laughing and playing. In the evening there was barbeque, songs and dancing. Everything was fine till 12 pm. But being near the village, it was very cold.
As Rajesh started getting cold, he went to his room to get a shawl. As he opened the cupboard, he felt someone standing behind him. A thorn in his side came for a moment, but he ignored it as “must be tired”. Took the shawl and started looking in the mirror. Just then, the door of the closet suddenly opened in front of his eyes. Rajesh turned around in shock… and immediately the same door slammed shut.
A frightened Rajesh came running into the hall. Friends were laughing and chatting. He too sat between them, trying to compose himself. Everyone went to bed at around 1 am. Rajesh and his younger brother Nami went to the same room.
Nami insisted on keeping the French window open. “It’s cool outside,” he said. Rajesh felt a little strange, but did not say anything. He turned on the TV and sat there. At about half past two in the night, suddenly strange noises started coming from outside. Screams as if someone was being beaten, sounds like nails scraping on the window, movement of shadows… all this was happening minute by minute.
Rajesh literally froze. He was speechless for fear. Nami was fast asleep. Around four in the morning, Rajesh switched off the TV and closed his eyes.
Nami was already awake when he woke up in the morning. He said in a trembling voice, “Dada, why were you calling me ‘Mona… Mona…’ at night? I woke up around two. You looked like you were fast asleep. I couldn’t sleep after that.”
Hearing this, the ground under Rajesh’s feet shifted. Because at that time he himself was fully awake. He narrated the incident to other friends. At first everyone thought it was funny… but no one got that fear out of their minds.
By noon on the same day, everyone vacated the villa. Those friends who had gone for the marrow came back silent, silent and with a fear that would not be forgotten for the rest of their lives.
