Airlines have alerted passengers to potential flight disruptions this weekend due to inclement winter weather, following the havoc wreaked by Storm Goretti with snow, hail, heavy rain and strong winds across the UK on Thursday and Friday.
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice across large swathes of the UK for Saturday, 10 January. A snow and ice alert came into effect at midday on Friday and remains until 3pm today for Scotland, the North East, Yorkshire, and parts of the East Midlands and the North West.
An additional warning for ice has been issued for the South West, Wales, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, in place until midday on Saturday. Northern Ireland is also under a yellow warning for rain from 9pm today until 9pm tomorrow.
Further alerts have been issued for Sunday, including a yellow warning for snow and ice covering Scotland and the North, extending to the eastern half of Greater Manchester. This warning commences at 2am tomorrow morning and lasts until 3pm on Sunday.
Snow is anticipated to cause significant disruption in Scotland where both yellow and amber warnings are in force.
Passengers scheduled to fly in the coming days could experience some disruption due to the weather, as warned by both Jet2 and Ryanair. Jet2 stated that it intends to operate flights as close to schedules as possible, but "there may be some disruption should the weather or the forecast deteriorate."
The airline confirmed its operations teams are closely monitoring current and forecasted weather conditions. Jet2 has urged passengers to check in as scheduled, adding that those whose flights are disrupted will be contacted directly.
It stated: "We will, where possible, board all flights for an on-time departure, however, please be prepared for a longer than normal wait either in the terminal or onboard the aircraft to depart."
The airline apologised in advance for any disruption.
Ryanair has also issued an update today, warning: "Potential disruption to/from the UK (Saturday January 10) due to de-icing. Affected passengers will be notified and we encourage all passengers due to travel to/ from the UK to keep an eye on the Ryanair app for the latest updates."
The weather is not just having an impact on flights in the UK - temperatures have also plummeted across mainland Europe. Storm Goretti brought heavy snowfalls and strong winds to France and Germany, whilst Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has cancelled more than 3,200 flights since January 2 due to snowy conditions in the Netherlands, according to Flightradar24.com. In a statement on its website, the airport declared: " In the past week we've been dealing with wintery weather conditions, which have caused cancellations and delays. Together with the airlines and all our other partners, we're doing everything we can to help as many travellers as possible get on their way. Due to persistent winter weather, flights may be delayed this weekend.
"We are monitoring the weather forecasts and will adjust our advice accordingly. In addition, fewer trains will be running to and from Schiphol due to the adjusted NS timetable and railway works."
