Dominik Szoboszlai produced an incredible error as Liverpool beat Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup at Anfield. After making it 1-0 with a thunderous long-range strike, the Hungarian produced a wild mistake in front of that Kop that allowed ex-Liverpool youngster Adam Phillips to make it 2-1 five minutes before half-time and gave the League One side hope of pulling off an epic comeback.
TNT Sports co-commentator Ally McCoist reacted: "I'm actually stunned at what I've just seen. I really am. He's officially gone from the sublime to the ridiculous." The Liverpool midfielder tracked back well to stop Phillips latching on to a loose ball and going one-vs-one with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Szoboszlai then carried the ball through his own box but instead of clearing, tried a backheel to Mamardashvili while just six yards out from goal. The goalscorer got it all wrong and gifted possession to Phillips, who gratefully lashed in from close range to halve the deficit.
Szoboszlai had earlier put the hosts in front with a blistering effort from 25 yards that flew past Murphy Cooper in the Barnsley goal. Another brilliant goal, this time from Jeremie Frimpong, doubled Liverpool's lead on 36 minutes.
But in the 40th minute, Szoboszlai's lapse in judgement saw Barnsley get on the scoresheet. Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman said on TNT at half-time: "I just don't like that at all. I know the lads were saying it's a mistake. I don't like that. You never, ever do that in a game of football. He'd never do that against Arsenal, he'd never do that against Man City. Why's he doing it against Barnsley? I'll never know.
"Something must be going on his mind. He was flicking the ball around in the first half, looking comfortable. You don't do that in those areas. That's a massive mistake. Mamardashvili didn't want it, he was walking away. I don't know why he did it!"
His colleague: Joleon Lescott added: "It seemed to be an arrogant mistake. It's not nice, anything like that. There's never a time to backheel in the six-yard box, regardless of what the scoreline is."
McCoist added on commentary: "I don't know what Szoboszlai is thinking. He does fantastically well matching the run. Defensively his duties were all but done as he got in front of the attacker. Does he try to stand on the ball or backheel it... oh he does. He tries to backheel it!
"What on earth is he thinking there? That is incredible. Absolutely incredible. He scored a fantastic goal earlier but I don't think I've ever seen a player of that quality do something like that in an area where you shouldn't even be thinking about it. I'm stunned at that.
"For 40 minutes he might have been the best player on the pitch then he does something like that! I can't believe what I've seen there."
Much to Szoboszlai's relief, Liverpool ran out 4-1 winners thanks to late goals from substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. They meet Brighton & Hove Albion at home in the next round. The Seagulls knocked Manchester United out in round three by winning 2-1 away at Old Trafford.
