Albanese stated at a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra that all Australian government buildings will fly flags at half mast on January 22 in remembrance of the victims of the attack that targeted an event celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah at the famous Bondi Beach on December 14.

According to Albanese, there will be a meeting of solidarity and remembering with the motto “light will win.”

In reaction to the incident, the prime minister said Monday that the federal parliament will be brought back from summer vacation two weeks early on January 19 in order to enact legislation for stricter gun ownership and hate speech regulations, according to Xinhua news agency. With firearms in their hands, the terrorists at Bondi Beach harbored hate. We must address both, and this bill will address both,” Albanese said.

The incident claimed the lives of fifteen individuals, including Naveed Akram, the suspected shooter, and his father, Sajid, who was shot and killed by police.

Authorities have accused Naveed Akram with 15 murder charges and one terrorism-related charge, claiming that the attack was motivated by Islamic State ideology.

A wide range of reforms are included in the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill, such as harsher penalties for hate crimes, new serious offenses for hate preachers who try to radicalize young Australians and incite hatred to intimidate and harass, and a more stringent prohibition on symbols that are forbidden.

If approved, the measure would also allow the Home Affairs Minister to designate organizations as banned hate groups and make it simpler for the minister to revoke or deny a visa to anybody who intends to preach hatred.

Before discussing the law, the government will make a motion of condolence to honor the attack victims.
