The second bathing festival of Makar Sankranti will be held on January 15 in Prayagraj Magh Mela. Anticipating more than one crore devotees, the administration has made elaborate arrangements for crowd management, security, cleanliness and AI based monitoring.

Prayagraj. Makar Sankranti, the second bathing festival of Magh Mela organized on the Sangam banks of Prayagraj, will take place on January 15. After the safe bath of more than 31 lakh devotees on the Paush Purnima bathing festival, now the fair administration is busy in preparations for the Makar Sankranti bathing festival.

The administration estimates that more than one crore devotees will take a dip of faith in the Sangam on this festival. For the convenience of the devotees, special arrangements have been made at the bathing ghats, so that they have to walk as little as possible. For this, parking arrangements have been made near the ghats.

Mega plan ready for crowd management for Makar Sankranti bath

In Magh Mela 2024, 28.95 lakh devotees took bath on the Makar Sankranti bathing festival. Keeping in mind the possibility of the number of devotees increasing almost three times this time, the fair administration has prepared a mega plan for crowd management. Magh Mela officer Rishiraj said that this year 42 temporary parking lots have been developed for crowd control and smooth traffic, in which more than one lakh vehicles can be parked.

12,100 feet long ghat, all basic facilities available

A total of 12,100 feet length of bathing ghats have been constructed during Magh Mela 2025-26. For the convenience of the devotees, all the necessary basic facilities including changing rooms, straw, cosa, toilets have been provided at these ghats.

According to the fair official, 8,000 cusecs of water is being released daily from the Ganga Barrage in Kanpur to ensure adequate availability of water in the Ganga. In Prayagraj, tapping of all 81 drains falling into Ganga and Yamuna has been completed and Ganga water is being continuously monitored.

Special focus on cleanliness and purity of Ganga

On the instructions of the government, cleanliness, safety and easy transportation have been given top priority in the Magh Mela. Fair officer Rishiraj said that extensive arrangements have been made to ensure that the Magh Mela is open defecation free (ODF), odor free and zero discharge into the Ganga. According to this:

  • 25,880 toilets
  • 11,000 dustbins
  • More than 10 lakh liner bags
  • 25 suction vehicles
  • 3,300 sanitation workers have been deployed.

Special arrangements for easy transportation for devotees

For easy movement of devotees, the facility of bike taxi and golf cart has been made available in the fair area, which will provide special relief to the elderly and women.

Magh Mela security arrangements: surveillance through land, water and technology

Magh Mela Superintendent of Police Neeraj Pandey said that in view of security, extensive arrangements have been made in the entire fair area.

Security systems include:

  • 17 police stations and 42 police posts
  • 20 fire stations
  • 7 fire stations
  • 20 fire watch towers
  • 1 Water Police Station
  • 1 Water Police Control Room
  • 4 Jal Police Sub-Control Room

Apart from this, more than 8 kilometers of deep water barricading and 2 kilometers of river line barricading (for one-way route) have been done.

Crowd monitoring with AI and CCTV

Para military forces have been deployed to further strengthen the security of the fair area. More than 400 cameras, including AI enabled cameras, have been installed in the city and fair area along with the already installed CCTV cameras. Crowd monitoring, crowd density analysis, incident reporting, cleanliness and security monitoring are being done through these cameras, so that the Makar Sankranti bathing festival remains completely safe and well organized.
