Bangkok started Wednesday under a thick haze, prompting authorities to advise people in the city’s main business and financial areas to remain indoors. According to a Bloomberg report, the districts of Bang Rak, Pathum Wan, and Sathon, home to international offices, embassies, and major shopping centers, recorded the highest levels of air pollution on the city’s air-quality index.
Levels of PM2.5, tiny particles that can reach deep into the lungs, pushed Bangkok to 12th place among the world’s most polluted major cities on Wednesday morning, according to IQAir, as reported by Bloomberg.
The city faces recurring smog problems during the cooler months. Officials say traffic emissions, industrial activity, construction dust, and cross-border agricultural fires, combined with weather patterns that trap polluted air, contribute to the problem.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration urged both public and private organizations to allow employees to work from home during high pollution days to reduce traffic and limit health risks.
