A new scientific research is in the news challenging the medicines that were relied upon till now for blood sugar control. According to this research, some natural elements present in a common cup of coffee can work in the body in the same way as Diabetes Medicines are used, due to which the sugar level does not increase rapidly after eating food.

This claim of research has created a stir in the medical and health world. Scientists say that special compounds found in coffee affect the enzymes that control blood sugar, which can open the way for new and natural treatments for type-2 diabetes patients in the future. However, experts are also advising that it is very important to consult a doctor before quitting the medicine.

Coffee and blood sugar connection

According to the report published in Daily Mail, till now most of the people considered coffee as an energy drink or a habit. But when scientists deeply examined the elements present in roasted Arabica coffee, a shocking truth came to light. Research has found that certain compounds in coffee affect the same enzymes in the body on which the type-2 diabetes medicine Acarbose works.

How does coffee work like a medicine?

Actually, after eating food, our body breaks down carbohydrates and converts them into glucose. An enzyme named alpha-glucosidase plays an important role in this process. Medicines like Acarbose slow down this enzyme, due to which blood sugar does not increase suddenly. Research has revealed that some natural compounds present in coffee also do exactly the same thing – that is, reducing sugar spikes after eating food.

Discovery of three new compounds

In this study published in the journal Beverage Plant Research, scientists identified three completely new compounds, which were named Caffealdehydes A, B, and C. These compounds, extracted through a three-step extraction process, showed the ability to effectively inhibit alpha-glucosidase.

What is type-2 diabetes?

Type-2 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin or is unable to use insulin properly. The result is increase in blood sugar. If it is not controlled, it can cause serious problems like heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, loss of eyesight and nerve damage.

Can diabetes be reversed?

In some cases, type-2 diabetes can be controlled or reversed to a great extent by losing weight and changing lifestyle. But many patients have to depend on insulin, GLP-1 injections or medicines for a long time.

Less risk of diabetes in coffee drinkers?

It has also been seen in previous large studies that people who drink coffee regularly have less risk of type-2 diabetes. According to some research, the most benefits have been seen in drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day. More than 40 crore people around the world are suffering from type-2 diabetes. This has become the fastest growing health problem in the UK. Due to obesity, its cases have increased rapidly even among people below 40 years of age.

Weight loss injections and new warnings

Injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy were considered a revolution in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. However, a major review from Oxford warns that their benefits may gradually wear off once treatment is stopped, meaning patients may have to take them for a longer period.
