Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik on Thursday suspended two of its MLAs, Arvind Mahapatra and Sanatan Mahakud, from the party. This action has been taken through an official order issued by party president Naveen Patnaik. According to party sources, complaints were being received continuously against both the MLAs for a long time.
Arvind Mahapatra and Sanatan Mahakud were suspended with immediate effect for being found involved in anti-party activities. It is being told that this action has been taken due to allegations of violation of party line and indiscipline against both the MLAs. BJD has also sent a copy of this order to the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly, so that formal information about this suspension can be recorded under the legislative process. At the same time, a copy of the order has also been sent to both the MLAs. It is being told that the party organization may be reviewed and tightened in the coming days.
The leadership took this drastic decision when the conduct of both the MLAs did not improve despite repeated warnings. With the suspension, both the MLAs have been relieved from all posts and responsibilities of the party. According to sources, in recent times the rhetoric and political activities of both the leaders were going beyond the party line, which damaged the image of the organization. Taking this seriously, party president Naveen Patnaik approved disciplinary action.
This suspension is being seen as an important political development within the BJD, especially at a time when the party is emphasizing on organizational strength and internal unity. The BJD leadership has made it clear that discipline is paramount in the party and indiscipline will not be tolerated at any level. After this action, the stir in the politics of the state has intensified, while the opposition has also started raising questions on the government and the ruling party regarding this decision.
