Amateur Jordan Smith beats Jannik Sinner to win $1 million jackpot

Amateur tennis player Jordan Smith defeated world number two Jannik Sinner to win the jackpot at the Australian Open’s Million Dollar One Point Slam.

In an incredibly short amount of time, Smith went from an unknown personality to a champion at Rod Laver Arena. The tournament format offers amateurs the unique opportunity to compete against the sport’s elite players for a life-changing prize.

Smith did not even need to hit the ball to win the match against Sinner, as the Italian star failed his only allowed serve. Smith also defeated world number four Amanda Anisimova in front of 10,000 people. In addition to these two stars, Pedro Martinez, a pro ranked 71st in the world, also lost to the amateur.

The 29-year-old previously won five national junior titles and reached a career high ranking of 1,141 in 2023. After playing in America, he returned to Australia to coach at Castle Hill Tennis Academy in Sydney, which is owned by his family.

Along with a A$1 million prize, Smith also won a A$50,000 grant for this academy. Reflecting on his fairytale milestone, Smith said, “I was going into it thinking I was gonna win one point, and it just kept happening. I was just trying to smile as much as I can and just enjoy the moment.”
