Meghan Markle and Prince Harryare keen to return to the UK, but if they want to do that, they need to play by our rules this time. The British public are a discerning lot, and they won't want them back if they still want everything on their terms. Jeremy Kyle said on his TV show: "If you ask the majority of Brits, they don't trust him or her, in any way, and don't want them here, and I think that's it."
And that couldn't be any closer to the truth. I really believe that Meghan thought they were playing the long game, that they could go to the US to get the public on their side with accusations of "concerns about skin colour" and lack of interest in her mental health, which would then force the royal family to back down to save their reputations, and she could start setting the rules. Now things are sour, and people know it. It's not just sour with the public, it's sour with the royals, and that's where the issue is, because all their hopes of success rely on their connection to royals, and if King Charles and Prince William won't acknowledge them, they're no better than Thomas and Samantha Markle, just peddling gossip to whoever will listen.
The key takeaway is that they did not go about any of this the right way, and it's well and truly put the nail in the coffin in the court of public opinion. If they want to come back, really, they need to throw themselves into UK life once and for all and do some damage control; this half-and-half nonsense won't work anymore.
Two huge mistakes that the pair made were conducting a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 to share intimate royal stories, which was the first catalyst for Harry's estrangement from his brother and father. Chucking them under the bus as soon as they were offered the spotlight would have been a huge blow. Then, to get into bed with Netflix in exchange for a mega-deal was a huge risk, which hasn't paid off. The work (and money) has dried up, and it seems the pair's eagerness to talk on camera will put a kibosh on any talks with the royals, in case it gets leaked.
Meghan Markle could have been a fantastic change for the UK. Like Princess Kate, she grew up without royal blood, but unlike Kate she found herself immersed in the world of acting in the US, living a very different like to what Prince Harry lived. When they first started dating, the public was open to Meghan, seeing the woman who finally tamed Harry, and who appeared to make him very happy; that's when things went downhill.
But part of being a royal is humility and grace, two things which Meghan sorely lacks. In exchange for a lavish lifestyle paid for by the public, you are given the responsibility to spend time travelling around the country to meet the public and do your duty. But it seems that Meghan wanted the perks without the work, and that certainly won't happen the second time around.
She's played two games here. Number one, she wanted to be a rule breaker, likely taking inspiration from Princess Diana, but she didn't know where to draw the line. Number two, the biggest mistake, was when this didn't go her way, she decided to flee, hoping that her TV shows would help her appeal to the US market, but this doesn't seem to have worked either, hence why stories of a UK return are suddenly emerging.
I'm all for forgiveness and reconciliation, but one thing needs to be made clear here. If Harry and Meghan want to reunite with his family in any capacity, they need to take accountability for their actions, and accept they can no longer have their cake and eat it too.
