Delhi Assembly has directed former Chief Minister Atishi to give his written statement regarding his 'derogatory remarks' against Sikh Gurus in the recently concluded winter session. Speaker Vijendra Gupta said that the notice given to Atishi ji is a separate matter, because this issue was handed over to the Privilege Committee as soon as it came on the table of the House. He said whatever action is being taken, it has been taken on the demand of the opposition. The opposition members themselves came to my chamber and put forward this demand.

He said that on the 8th we sent the matter for forensic investigation. The very next day comes the news that the Punjab government has completed the investigation and has also registered an FIR. He said that it appears as if the process of the House is being challenged.

'It is my responsibility to do justice to the House'

The speaker said that the truth cannot be denied. It is my responsibility to do justice to the House and I am discharging that responsibility. While replying, the DGP has asked for additional time. They have been given time till January 22 to submit their reply.

In a communication sent to him by the Assembly Secretariat, it has been said that the Chairperson of the Privileges Committee of the Assembly has asked Atishi to give his written statement by January 19. The issue of Atishi's disrespect shown towards Sikh gurus has turned into a major political controversy, involving the BJP in Delhi and AAP-ruled Punjab, after the Delhi government's program to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary last year was discussed in the Assembly session on January 6.

The speaker had said that he would attend the meeting.

The assembly's communication sent to Atishi states that during the winter session proceedings on January 6, he demanded a discussion on pollution in Delhi, ignoring the Speaker's request. Whereas the speaker had told them that the debate was listed for the next day.

It said that while doing so, you allegedly made derogatory remarks against Sikh Gurus, which caused an uproar in the House and disrupted the proceedings. Keeping in mind the principles of natural justice, the Speaker requested you to attend the meeting and clarify the true position.
