Monty Don has shared his plans to leave a heartfelt legacy for his family to cherish for years after he's "long dead". Speaking at BBC Gardeners' World Live, the beloved presenter shared exactly how his family can remember him after his death.
He expressed his joy in "growing things", an activity that brings him immense happiness. The conversation turned to the topic of patience, as gardening, unlike cooking, doesn't offer "instant gratification" due to the slow pace of plant growth. The 70-year-old horticultural expert spoke fondly of the "rhythms of the season" and the centuries-long journey of an oak tree's growth. This led Monty to disclose that he has planted a woodland for his grandchildren to appreciate long after he's gone, with the hope that they will continue this tradition for their own offspring. Monty explained: "No, you see, I love the rhythms of the season and of the natural world. I like the fact an oak tree takes 400 years to grow."
He went on to say: "A few years ago, I planted a wood for my grandchildren, and I, you know, will be long dead before that is anything like you know...great," reports Gloucestershire Live.
"You know, and they will be my age before the trees are like mature, and I hope they plant for their grandchildren, and I like that rhythm. I like the fact I sow seeds in March and I won't be harvesting the tomatoes or whatever it might be until August. So no, it's not so much patient; I just accept that rhythm."
Monty and his wife, Sarah, are parents to three children: Tom, Adam, and Freya, and grandparents to two grandsons and one granddaughter, Daisy. Meanwhile, an unexpected Hollywood star has recently revealed themselves as an admirer.
Pamela Anderson, 57, the Baywatch icon from the 90s, has praised the Gardeners' World presenter, who has authored numerous gardening books, saying he writes "beautifully" about his passion, according to the Mail.
She revealed: "I love Monty Don, his videos and books. He writes so beautifully and poetically when it comes to gardens."
Monty has attracted another high-profile American admirer in LL Cool J, the rapper behind the hit 'Mama Said Knock You Out'. The unexpected duo met at BBC Breakfast last year.
The television favourite has garnered considerable popularity stateside following his American Gardens series in 2020. BBC presenter Nina Warhurst shared details of their encounter at the Salford studios.
She recounted that she "overheard in the office corridor... LL Cool J and entourage telling Monty Don they are massive fans and asking for a selfie" in the office hallways.
