A woman allegedly died by suicide following a domestic dispute with her mother-in-law over ghee in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred in Imlaudi village under the Indar police station area, station in-charge Dinesh Singh told PTI.

According to police, Sonam Jatav, who was married in 2018 and had two young children, had been cooking separately due to ongoing family disagreements. On Thursday morning, her mother-in-law asked her for some ghee. Sonam initially refused, but later gave around 100 grams after her husband Dhanpal intervened.

However, tensions escalated when Dhanpal brought additional ghee for his mother against Sonam’s wishes, leading to a heated argument between the two women.

Police said that in a fit of anger, Sonam allegedly consumed a poisonous substance kept in the house. She was rushed to a medical facility in Pachavali and later referred to Shivpuri District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, the official added.
