The duo play Miami cop partners Lt. Dane Dumars and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, putting their friendship to the test. After discovering millions of dollars hidden in a safehouse, the officers start to question whom on their team they can trust, including each other. The official synopsis of the film reads: "Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question - including who they can rely on."
The Rip Is Based On True Story?
The movie's trailer states that it's "inspired by true events," but how real is The Rip? It is but only loosely. Earlier, writer-director Joe Carnahan explained that the inspiration for his script came from the experiences of one of his friend, telling Tudum, "The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department."

Further, he added, "It's loosely based on one officer in Miami and an event ... if you called in and reported illegal money stored somewhere, you could get a piece of it, if they captured it. So, of course, all of a sudden they started getting calls, and there was one time where they showed up at this house, and there was $20 million there."
More About The Rip
"My enduring love for those classic '70's cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era," he said. "Films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat." More specific details about the exact story the film draws from have not been made available at this stage, but it seems possible that inspiration was also taken from the Miami River Cops scandal in the 1980s.
