The festival of Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated with devotion and devotion across the country on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month. This holy fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu is considered the first Ekadashi of the year. According to mythological belief, on this day Ekadashi Devi appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu, who protected the religion by killing the demon named Mur. This is the reason why this Ekadashi is also called the mother of fasts.

 

Before sunrise, devotees take bath and meditate and worship Lord Vishnu. On this day, special decorations are done in the temples and the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya’ is chanted by the devotees. By observing this fast all sins are destroyed and salvation is attained.

 

When is Utpanna Ekadashi in 2025?

This Ekadashi fast, celebrated on the Ekadashi tithi of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month, will start on 15th November 2025 at 12:49 pm and will end on 16th November 2025 at 2:37 pm.

Importance of Utpana Ekadashi

  • This is considered the first Ekadashi of the year. It is believed that Ekadashi Devi appeared on this day.
  • This fast is considered to destroy all sins.
  • The person who observes this fast with devotion gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • By observing this fast a person attains salvation and the troubles of life go away.

Vrat-vidhan (how to keep fast)

Dashami Tithi (a day before)

  • Eat satvik food after evening.
  • Follow celibacy and stay away from negative emotions.

On Ekadashi Tithi:

  • Take bath in the morning and worship Lord Vishnu.
  • The person observing the fast should fast for the whole day.
  • Fruits, milk and water can be consumed.
  • Be sure to offer Tulsi leaves in the puja.
  • Recite the mantra ‘Om Vishnuve Namah’
  • There is also a provision for recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama or Bhagavad Gita.

At night:

  • There is a tradition of performing bhajans and kirtans, offering aarti to God and keeping vigil at night.

Dwadashi date (next day of fast):

  • Feed the Brahmins and give them Dakshina.
  • After this, break the fast yourself (break the fast with fruits or satvik food).
