BBC audiences weary of police procedural dramas but craving something genuinely spine-tingling should look no further than a neglected hidden treasure released nearly a decade ago.
Six-episode supernatural thriller Requiem chronicles gifted cellist Matilda Gray (Lydia Wilson) whose world collapses after her mother Janice's suicide. The devastating event occurs precisely as she prepares to relocate to New York to further her music career, derailing her future plans entirely.
Rather than pursuing her dreams, she finds herself in a remote Welsh village investigating her mother's history in an attempt to understand why she ended her life.
This journey leads her down a mysterious path on which she uncovers the historical vanishing of a local young girl. As she delves further into the case, she reveals sinister truths that perhaps should have remained concealed.
The programme - shot throughout Wales - premiered in 2018 on both the BBC and Netflix and features a remarkable ensemble cast. BAFTA-winning performer Joanna Scanlan plays Janice, whilst Joel Fry (Plebs, Cruella) takes on the role of Matilda's friend, Hal Fine, reports the Mirror.
Tara Fitzgerald, James Frecheville, Sian Reese-Williams, Claire Rushbrook and Richard Harrington also appear.
Whilst the series has been removed from BBC iPlayer, all six episodes remain accessible on Netflix. The streaming platform's description states: "In the wake of a sudden tragedy, a London cellist unearths secrets that link her mother to the disappearance of a young girl in a small Welsh town."
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an audience rating of 56 per cent alongside a more favourable critics' rating of 73 per cent.
One critic hailed the series as the "scariest BBC drama ever made," whilst another enthused: "Brilliant! Well written, attractive storyline, great acting and directing. Lovely British scenery as well.
"If you like creepy British mysteries, this is way up there on my list," another viewer wrote, with a fourth commenting: "Creepy fun. Definitely binge worthy!"
Nevertheless, the show didn't win over everyone, with some criticising plot inconsistencies and sluggish pacing.
One frustrated viewer remarked: "This could have been a MUCH shorter series....so much filler going on. It has me wondering what's going on, but I'm not blown away by it all.
"Meh. Too many gaps, too long in the development of the story, too many unanswered questions..." another commented.
