The recent appointment of Shubman Gill as India's ODI captain has sparked considerable discussion, particularly from former cricketer Manoj Tiwary, who has openly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) choice to replace Rohit Sharma. Gill was named captain on October 4, 2025, following his role as vice-captain during India's T20 World Cup victory in 2024.
The BCCI's decision is part of a strategy to prepare for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, which is just two years away. Officials expressed concerns that Rohit, who will be 40 by that time, may not be the ideal leader for the tournament. Despite Rohit's success in leading India to the Champions Trophy in March 2025, the board chose Gill to ensure a long-term leadership vision.
The decision has generated mixed reactions among fans and analysts. While some support the transition, others, including Tiwary, argue that Rohit's recent achievements justify maintaining his captaincy. Tiwary suggested that India's recent ODI series loss to New Zealand could have had a different outcome under Rohit's leadership. He stated, "What was the need to remove Rohit Sharma? If Rohit were leading even today, the result would have been different."
Tiwary went on to advocate for Gill's removal and Rohit's return as captain, affirming, "Yes, absolutely," when asked if he wanted Rohit back. He urged the BCCI to reconsider their decision before the World Cup, emphasizing the importance of leadership in such a significant tournament. "It’s about the World Cup. It’s not just about a bilateral series or a random tournament," he added.
Highlighting Rohit's impressive track record, Tiwary noted his two ICC trophies and five IPL titles, contrasting them with Gill's relative inexperience. He argued that Rohit's tactical skills, ability to manage players, and game awareness set him apart. "Rohit has the experience. Shubman is still not an experienced captain in international cricket. Experience is shown in bowling changes, field placements, and reading situations," Tiwary explained.
In Tiwary's opinion, Rohit's leadership would provide India with a better chance of clinching the 2027 World Cup. Meanwhile, Gill is still at the beginning of his captaincy career, yet to achieve a series victory.
