Preparations for the mayor elections in Chandigarh have intensified. Elections will be held for the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor on January 29. A strategy for victory is being prepared between BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. Meanwhile, Congress and AAP have decided on alliance. An agreement has been reached between both the parties to contest the elections together.
It is being told that discussions regarding alliance were going on between Congress and AAP for many days, but some leaders from both sides were uncomfortable with the two parties coming together. However, later an agreement was reached between the two parties regarding the alliance. After the mediation of Congress MP Manish Tiwari, an agreement was reached between the two parties. After which it has become clear that this time also the opposition will enter the field with a common strategy.
On Tuesday (January 20), Congress and AAP announced formation for the elections at the Congress office in Chandigarh. Congress President Lucky said that the election formula has been prepared and talks with AAP leaders have been completed. He told that an agreement has been reached on distribution of posts for contesting elections.
Under the alliance agreement, Aam Aadmi Party will field its candidate on the mayor's seat, while Congress will field candidates on the two seats of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Both the parties will support each other's candidates. According to both the parties, there is no option other than this alliance to stop BJP. The names of the alliance candidates will be announced tomorrow morning and nomination will take place after that. After the coming together of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, the contest has now become interesting.
There are a total of 35 councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. To win the post of Mayor, any party needs 19 votes. BJP has the maximum votes for the elections. It has a total of 18 councilors. AAP has 11 votes. Congress has 7 votes, out of which one vote will be from MP Manish Tiwari. The total votes of AAP and Congress together became 18. In a corporation with a total of 35 councilors, 19 votes are required for majority. For victory, one vote is needed from both BJP and Congress alliance. Now the election contest seems to be a tough one.
