Jamie Carragher has fired a dig at Gary Lineker after the former Match of the Day host landed a gigantic deal with Netflix. Lineker left the BBC in May to end 26 years at the helm of Match of the Day and is now focusing on his podcast, The Rest is Football.

The former England striker had been due to host the BBC ’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup but cut ties with the broadcaster completely. The exit hasn’t gone too badly for Lineker, who will instead work for Netflix at the World Cup in the summer.

Netflix signed a deal with The Rest is Football for the tournament, one which will reportedly see Lineker pull in more than the £1.35million he made at the BBC. The contract comes as a boost to Lineker’s co-stars on the podcast, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards – and it seems has generated some jealousy from rivals.

The topic came up on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage on Tuesday night when reporter Anita Jones said: “Micah, I’m hoping that you’re going to send me some of that Netflix money though.”

The former Manchester City defender laughed off the suggestion, so Jones added: “I didn’t get an answer though. Are you going to send me some of the Netflix money or what?”

Carragher jumped in, prompting Richards to describe the show as “just the number one pod in the UK”. Carragher then said: “Oh, the Netflix deal for the podcast that no-one listens to? Honestly, I don’t know anyone who listens to it!”

According to a recent report by Edison, The Rest is Football is the fifth most-listened to podcast in the UK and the most popular about sport. The Overlap, which has Carragher, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott on it, comes in at number 17 on the list.

The Rest is Football will come out daily during the World Cup, with Lineker, Shearer and Richards filming in New York. Lineker the Netflix deal was a "fantastic opportunity for the three of us to do what we love – talk football every day – but on a truly global stage".

It will include “game analysis, special guests, interviews and insights into the world's largest sporting event”.

Lineker co-founded Goalhanger, the production company which makes The Rest is Football along with a number of other successful podcasts. It recently announced it had surpassed 250,000 paying subscribers across its network, which pulls in 70 million episode views per month across audio and video for its 14 regular shows.
