The lottery for reservation for the posts of mayor of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra was announced today on Thursday. In this process of reservation, reservation was made first for Scheduled Tribe (ST), then for Scheduled Caste (SC), then for Other Backward Class (OBC) and finally for General (General) category. According to this lottery, the Mayor of Mumbai Municipal Corporation will be a woman.
An open category woman will get the post of Mayor in Mumbai. This has opened the way for BJP to stake claim for the post of Mayor, but Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena has raised objection to this reservation lottery process. Thackeray's Shiv Sena hoped that the post of Mayor of Mumbai would be given to someone from Other Backward Classes.
This objection was raised during the lottery process, which created some confusion. Mumbai is the most prosperous municipal corporation in the country. The budget of Mumbai Municipal Corporation is equal to the budget of a state. Therefore, the eyes of the entire country were fixed on the results of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Finally, the results were declared last week.
A total of 8 mayor posts have been reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC), which includes 4 female and 4 male reservations. These include Jalgaon, Chandrapur, Ahilyanagar, Akola (Women) and Ulhasnagar, Kolhapur, Panvel and Ichalkaranji.
The announcement of reservation for Municipal Corporations of Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Nashik, Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Satara, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalgaon has shocked many veterans. OBC woman will become mayor in Ahilyanagar. The post of Mayor in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation will also be reserved for OBCs. Ichalkaranji will also have an OBC mayor.
Whereas, reservation is being issued for general category in Solapur, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Sangli, Nashik, Dhule and Malegaon Municipal Corporations. There will be open category mayors in these municipal corporations. Reservation for open category has been announced in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations. BJP is in power in both the municipal corporations. There is a tough competition for the post of Mayor.
BJP won maximum 89 councilor seats in the 227-member Mumbai Municipal Corporation. BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena had contested the elections by forming a grand alliance. Shinde's Shiv Sena got 29 councillors. Mahayuti has a total of 118 councilors. Therefore, it is clear that she will become the mayor.
Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena has been in power in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for the last 25 years, but this time the people of Mumbai have voted to put him in the opposition. This year Uddhav and Raj Thackeray had formed an alliance in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections. In this, 65 councilors of Uddhav Thackeray and 6 councilors of Raj Thackeray's Shiv Sena were elected. The combined number of both was 71. At the same time, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena boycotted the mayor elections.
