New Delhi: Before the T20 World Cup 2026, the South African cricket team has suffered a major setback. The team’s two main batsmen, Tony DeGeorge and Donovan Ferreira, have been ruled out of the T20I series against the West Indies and the T20 World Cup in the Indian subcontinent due to injuries. Cricket South Africa has confirmed this.
Tony De Georgi suffered the injury when he played in the ODI series against India last month. While he completed a full rehabilitation programme, his fitness did not improve as expected. Due to this, the selectors decided to keep him out of the series against West Indies and the World Cup.
Donovan Ferreira, on the other hand, suffered a left shoulder fracture in the match between Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals during the SA20 League. This injury was serious, due to which he was also dropped from the team. The absence of these two players will hamper South Africa’s batting.
Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been included in the Proteas’ 15-man World Cup squad in place of Tony De Giorgi and Donovan Ferreira. Apart from this, experienced batsman David Miller will also not be able to play in the T20I series against West Indies due to injury. However, his playing the World Cup will depend on his fitness.
Cricket South Africa has also included Rubin Harman in the squad for the T20I series against West Indies. The South African team will assemble in its camp from 23 January. The first T20 match will be played on 27 January in Paarl, the second match will be played on 29 January in Centurion and the third match will be played on 31 January in Johannesburg.
The players, who are playing in the SA20 knockout stages, will join the squad on January 26. After this, all the players will leave for India from Johannesburg on 1 February. Now it remains to be seen how the South African team, which is struggling with injuries, performs in the T20 World Cup.
