Managing Chelsea as Jeremy Jacquet agreement reached and three transfers completed

Liam Rosenior faces a substantial task following his appointment as Chelsea boss in place of Enzo Maresca. Despite significant spending under the current ownership, there remain obvious problems within the squad that require attention. Wednesday's uninspiring Champions League victory over Pafos did nothing to improve the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues' chances of bypassing the play-off round hang in the balance going into next week's final round of league fixtures. At the same time, they have dropped out of the title race and face an uphill battle in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal, having suffered a 3-2 defeat at home in the first leg. Here are some of the principal matters on the new head coach's agenda...

Centre-back recruitment

Having failed to fulfil Maresca's request in the summer, Chelsea are pursuing a central defender this month. Rennes' Jeremy Jacquet tops their list of targets and has reportedly already reached an agreement on personal terms with the club.

However, crucially, no transfer fee has been settled between the two parties. Chelsea are understood to value the player at £43million whilst Rennes are holding firm at £52m, potentially allowing other interested parties to enter the race.

Liverpool and Arsenal are among the other clubs to have been linked with the 20-year-old Frenchman.

One proposal under discussion to complete a deal involves Chelsea signing him this month and then loaning him back to Rennes for the remainder of the season, according to RMC Sport. While such a scenario wouldn't immediately address the Blues' defensive problems, it would be a savvy move to secure one of Europe's most sought-after young talents.

Securing Reece James

Concerns are mounting that James might become restless if Chelsea continue to underperform in the Premier League. Having overcome various injury setbacks, the star valued at £44m has been one of the Blues' most consistent performers this season.

The same cannot be said for all his team-mates. The club needs to demonstrate that he can fulfil his ambitions at Stamford Bridge.

While he still has over two years remaining on his current contract, a new deal would help ensure his future, or at least prevent the possibility of him leaving on a bargain.

Another squad overhaul

Given the frequent player turnover at Stamford Bridge, an overhaul is an annual event. With some players evidently not part of the club's plans, it would be wise to transfer them as soon as possible.

This includes striker David Datro Fofana, who has been recalled from his loan at Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk with the intention of selling him this month. Leicester City are among the clubs linked with the Ivorian.

Another forward, Tyrique George, is available and has been associated with Bournemouth, who are looking for a striker after selling Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City. Crystal Palace and Fulham are also potential landing spots.

Resolving the Sterling stalemate

Raheem Sterling's future at the club remains uncertain, even following Maresca's departure. Earlier this week, Rosenior indicated that matters "will be clearer in the next couple of days," hinting that the ex-Manchester City winger might finally depart the club this month.

It's difficult to criticise a player on £325,000 per week for showing reluctance to move on, but change is essential if he's to resurrect a career that hasn't merely stalled, but appears to be going backwards.

Both parties must work together to reach a compromise, whether that involves terminating his contract or arranging a transfer or loan deal.
