As the cost of living crisis continues to tighten its grip on household finances, many are seeking ways to save money wherever possible. Yet, some might be unaware that they could potentially shave hundreds off a specific health expense.

Those who aren't entitled to free prescriptions but require multiple medications each month could benefit from the NHS' prescription prepayment certificate (PPC). This scheme enables individuals to pay for their medication in advance at a reduced rate.

The current offerings include:

  • A three-month PPC for £32.05
  • A 12-month PPC for £114.50
  • An HRT PPC for £19.80

At present, the standard NHS prescription charge stands at £9.90 per item in England. This price has been frozen for 2026/2027.

For those paying for one prescription monthly, this equates to £29.70 over three months or £118.80 annually, meaning a PPC wouldn't result in savings and could, in fact, prove more costly in certain instances.

However, if you're paying for two prescriptions monthly, this totals £59.40 over three months or £237.60 annually. In this scenario, a PPC would yield annual savings of £123.10.

In essence, PPCs tend to be beneficial only for those with two or more monthly prescriptions, and the more prescriptions required, the greater the potential savings when opting for a PPC. For instance, individuals needing four monthly prescription items could save over £360 annually.

PPCs encompass all NHS prescriptions, including NHS dental prescriptions, irrespective of the number of items required. However, it doesn't extend to certain health-related items such as wigs or fabric supports.

The HRT PPC provides unlimited access to specific HRT medications for a 12-month period. This applies even if the HRT is prescribed for reasons other than menopausal symptoms.

You can apply for a PPC online, and it will commence from the day you submit your application unless you specify a different date. If you've incurred prescription costs while awaiting your PPC, you might be eligible to apply for a refund.

Alternatively, you can apply via the PPC order line on 0300 330 1341, which will be effective from the day you place the call. Some pharmacies may also offer a 3-month PPC or the HRT PPC, valid from the day of purchase.

Upon receipt of your PPC, you'll need to present it at the pharmacy each time you collect prescriptions. If your details do not correspond with those on your prescription or the PPC is otherwise invalid, you may receive a penalty charge. More information can be found on the NHS and NHSBSA websites.
