Magh Mela Prayagraj: The ongoing dispute involving Jyotirpeeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand and the Magh Mela administration has taken a new turn with contrasting public statements from Uttar Pradesh’s top political leadership. The situation has drawn significant attention due to its religious, social, and political implications, especially at a time when the Magh Mela holds deep spiritual importance for millions of devotees.
The controversy began when Jyotirpeeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand initiated a protest during the Magh Mela, raising objections related to administrative decisions and alleged disrespect. The protest, which has continued for several days, has sparked debate across political and religious circles, highlighting tensions between religious authorities and the state administration.
The Magh Mela, held at the Sangam in Prayagraj, is one of the most sacred Hindu congregations. Any disruption or dispute during this period is viewed as sensitive, both culturally and politically. As the protest gained momentum, it prompted reactions from senior leaders of the Uttar Pradesh government.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the issue with a firm tone, indirectly criticising the protest. He suggested that certain elements were attempting to weaken Sanatan Dharma while pretending to represent religious interests. According to him, such actions could harm social harmony and required vigilance.
The Chief Minister emphasized that for a yogi, saint, or sanyasi, religion and the nation are paramount. He remarked that a sanyasi does not possess personal wealth, and that their true wealth lies in their faith and devotion to the nation. His statements reflected concern that religious platforms should not be misused for activities that could divide society or undermine traditional values.
In contrast, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya adopted a softer and more respectful approach toward the Shankaracharya. Expressing reverence, he stated that he bowed before the seer and appealed to him to conclude the protest. Maurya urged him to take a holy dip at the Sangam and bring the chapter of controversy to a peaceful close.
Responding to questions regarding allegations of disrespect toward the Shankaracharya, Maurya made it clear that any insult to a revered saint, acharya, or Shankaracharya was unacceptable. He assured that if any such incident were proven, a formal inquiry would be conducted and appropriate action would follow against those responsible.
Maurya stressed that the immediate priority of the government was to resolve the issue amicably and ensure that the spiritual atmosphere of the Magh Mela remained undisturbed. He publicly appealed to the Shankaracharya to end the protest, highlighting the importance of restraint, mutual respect, and religious harmony during such a significant event.
His remarks were seen as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and prevent the controversy from overshadowing the religious significance of the Mela. The Deputy Chief Minister’s tone underscored the government’s intention to maintain dialogue rather than confrontation.
As the protest entered its sixth day, concerns arose over the health of the Shankaracharya. On Friday morning, he reportedly developed a high fever and withdrew to his vanity van around 10 am. This development raised apprehension among followers and observers.
Despite his illness, the seer emerged after 2 pm and resumed his dharna while seated on his chariot. His determination to continue the protest despite health challenges added a new dimension to the unfolding situation and intensified public focus on the issue.
The episode has highlighted differing approaches within the state leadership on how to handle sensitive religious protests. While one side emphasized caution against perceived conspiracies, the other focused on reconciliation and respect for religious sentiments.
